Movement is part of my artistic - and everyday - practice. Professionally, this has included performing, first as an Irish dancer then musical theatre and physical theatre actor, choreographing musicals and dance pieces, teaching movement and devising classes, and movement directing for theatre and film from period-specific pieces to new, abstract work. I’m especially fascinated by and passionate about embodiment: how do we inhabit our bodies fully? How do we explore the edges of our emotions through the body? And how can we extrapolate that exploration to create a physically embodied character? In practice, this looks like directing actors to build robust physical characters, devising new physical theatre pieces, creating original physical segments to add colour or abstract story-telling to text-based plays, and more straight forward movement practices of choreographing, period movement, and more. Inspirations include Sally Cookson’s Jane Eyre, Rebecca Taichman/David Dorfman/Paula Vogel’s Indecent, James Thierre’s The Toad Knew, Jack Holden/Bronagh Lagan’s Cruise, and Emma Rice’s Tristan and Yseult.
